Being open-minded and flexible is important for ideas to be shared and innovation to take place. An agenda is needed to keep things moving. However, it should be flexible and adaptable to achieve the tasks at hand. Dr. Richard Milner shared that a leader should have a plan in mind. However, it was important that the leader when working with the team also be open-minded. He also pointed out the importance of posing questions and validating people’s ideas to make them comfortable to share. He, too, pointed out the importance of risk-taking for innovation:

You need to have in your mind not what but where you want the discourse to lead. You have to pose questions and give people enough validation so that they can take a risk. Especially if you [as the leader in an organization] are the most senior person, people are looking at you to be the intellectual leader. Although they [newer team members] may have provocative ideas, some who are newer to the profession may be a bit timid; they may worry that the intellectual leader may not like something they said.

Dr. Milner pointed out that some people may lack the confidence to share their ideas or have a fear of expressing their opinion just in case others may not agree:

What I do, I always try to validate the ideas even if a person is off target. I try to find some good in what folks are saying and verbalize it. This act of recognizing the strengths of comments makes people feel more comfortable sharing and risk-taking that the work goes to the next level of innovation. For some people, they have been told their entire life they are not quite adequate enough. Because of this, they may shut down when in fact they have much to offer.

Dr. Milner pointed out that hierarchical roles can be intimidating. Therefore, validating people’s ideas and honoring people who are share ideas are important. A leader can only do this if he or she values the team member’s contributions. In addition, each team member should feel valued by the entire team.

Validate people’s ideas so that they feel safe to take risks.
